Chord Rumour was our second attempt at producing a speaker cable, the first two being Myth and Legend – copper and polyethylene flat cables in single and bi-wire configuration. By the time these had been produced, we were already investigating speaker cables that used silver-plated conductors in combination with PTFE insulation. We had been experimenting with twisted pair conductor configurations – at the time heavy gauge parallel conductors were the standard for speaker cables. By twisting the conductors together, we could hear the noise floor of the system improve. We reached an ideal twist ratio and designed the cable around this.
Rumour uses 16 AWG conductors that were relatively small in comparison to most other speaker cables at the time. The company that produced it for us were not able to fit an outer jacket, but they were able to reproduce the number of twists we had specified and the precision with which they grouped and then insulated the conductors was to a standard we couldn’t find anywhere else. So the first version of Rumour was simply a twisted pair of cables with a black and white conductor.
When we launched Chord Rumour, it was one of the smallest speaker cables available. Retailers would take it into their demo rooms looking dubious and come out looking surprised and delighted. It sounded a lot bigger than it looked, it carried detail and dynamics really well and it was more coherent than just about any other cable around. As people got over the size and listened, rather than looked, it became a very popular cable.
Chord Rumour was launched in 1996 and apart from cosmetic changes it remains unchanged and part of the Chord Company speaker cable range 20 years on. The version we currently sell has identical conductors to the original, with white and red (rather than white and black) conductor insulation and a white PVC outer jacket. The diameter is 6mm and it remains a speaker cable that will work happily with any level of system. The size, the colour and the performance mean it’s still a popular cable and our Chord Shawline shielded speaker cable shares the same conductors.
